to the sistine chapel and beyond!
for the first time in at least a year, i slept a solid 7 hours without stirring once and, when i did wake up, felt like i needed another 7 hours of sleep. sadly, i didn't get that next 7 hours. read more...

hi ho, hi ho, it's off to rome i go
so i haven't really talked about it much before hand, but here i am at 4am on april 2 waking up to catch a plane to rome with mai and her sister jessie. there's just so much going on this month, and this year, that i just deal with things when they happen. so waking up at 4am is me being like "holy carp, i'm going to rome!" read more...

i'm a busy, busy beaver
hello all!
hope all is good for you this new spring 2009. the weather here in new orleans is great! the colder winter nights are gone and the heat/humidity of summer has not yet arrived. it could stay like this until november and i would be happy. sadly, i know that won't be the case. read more...

one down, many to go
woo hoo!! we signed our first new restaurant lease! coming soon to murfreesboro, tn, is a new cafe roma restaurant!
we have 90 days from friday to get it open and so far we don't think that will be hard to do. the spot was a restaurant previously, so some of the work is already done for us. that helps a lot.
will send some pics once we get a little further along and have something fun to show. :)

happy mardi gras!
woo! it's that time of year again... beads, boobs and beer running rampant in the crescent city! ah the memories... :)
well, not so much of any of that for me anymore. i'm actually at cafe roma from open to close today since mai decided to give the whole kitchen staff the day off after her sister jessie made sure to tell all of our regular customers that we would be open today. >.< silly mai... read more...

happy holidays!
woo! another year gone by, another year of not knowing what the heck i spent all that time doing. :)
well, i guess i know what i spent some of it doing. lately in particular i've been mopping up lots of dog pee. :( we got prince our puppy and he's totally not house trained yet. we've been a bit slack on it but as of 2009, that dog is going to get beaten into shape. he has been fun to have around but his time getting spoiled has come to an end. read more...

gustav goes to dinner at cafe roma
so i realized that i forgot to say anything about the restaurant in that last email. also, i just wanted another opportunity to annoy you all and clutter up your in-boxes. :)
cafe roma suffered no real physical damage at all, except that it lost power for some small period of time. we think that it was actually late in the storm or the day after, since when mai's sister first got there, there was no electricity and yet the ice machine was still full and the frozen foods were all still frozen. she and her husband loaded up their pickup truck with as much of it as they could and put it in various freezers in their house and their parents house.
unfortunately, the same could not be said for the walk-in cooler and all the other refrigerators. they were all very warm and filled with now spoiled food. :(
we just got power back to the restaurant friday around 9:30pm. we knew that since the alarm company called us up to tell us of the alarm going off. we had already cleaned out all the refrigerators and the walk-in, so that night we turned on the a/c (the building had a very noticeable musty stink to it) and then we showed up saturday at 7am and dove into the cleaning process. we were also able to call our primary food distributor and our produce company, both of whom were more than happy to give us a special saturday delivery so that we could get back open that afternoon still.
we called 1 or 2 kitchen staff and our niece oanh (our new head manager by the way) and one of our wait staff and we all went to town cleaning, prepping and doing what we had to to get open. customers started coming in and by the end of the day, you almost couldn't tell we had even been closed.
so aside from a lot of wasted stuff we had to toss out, the damage to anything around us (our houses, the restaurant, etc) was all really minimal compared to katrina 3 years ago.
i think the worst of it was suffered by mai, who for 2 days had to go without tv and internet and also didn't have cafe roma. she was so lost those 2 days, she didn't know what to do. :)

headed home
so the mayor of new orleans lifted the ban on returning so we're going to take our chances with traffic and such and head on home today. we're really hoping for an easier drive than our 15 hour flight out of town was.
will let you know this evening what things in new orleans look like.

project evacuation successful!
so our normal 8 hour drive to nashville took 15 hours... that really was not a fun drive. although we made it out of new orleans on back roads and had a great start to the drive, even those soon got jammed up at every traffic light and stop sign. we dealt with that for a while and then got back on the highway where it looked clear. 5 minutes later, stand-still gridlock. we dealt with that until the we were halfway there (mileage-wise) and we finally got off the highway and navigated back roads until we were north of birmingham, al, where we figured there wouldn't be any more evacuation traffic jams. sadly, by then, we had already had to deal with the worst of the delays but at least it was smooth sailing for the last part of the trip, albeit incredibly late and delayed.
we're going to hand out here until we see what the deal is tomorrow and what the delay in returning to new orleans might be.
hope you're all having a better labor day weekend than we are. :)
