80k and 80 degrees

hello all!

hope everyone had a great thanksgiving and didn't get too overly stuffed on food like i did. mai did all the cooking this time and made way too much stuff... tons of dressings, a fried turkey (actually, i fried that and was afraid of it blowing up on me every second it was cooking), a turduchen (a hen in a duck in a turkey), ribs, veggies, more veggies and a chocolate cake. it was all great and we ate leftovers for about a week (well, mai did, i got sick of them after 2 days). read more...

the charleston 60!

howdy everyone!

hope you're all having a good fall season. i can barely tell it's fall since we're still hitting mid to high 70's here in nawlins. i'm not really complaining but i do miss bundling up in my favorite sweat shirts and enjoying the crisp, cool air.

my week in charleston was fun! mom had a great time on her 60th and living on a boat for a week was neat. you can check out all the pics here:

happy halloween!

hi all!

it's been a while since i last bothered you all, so here i am again. :)

october has been good. the best thing about it is that summer weather is finally over with and it actually feels like fall. that's really only happened in the last week. until then, it was still mid to high 80's and humid. we're finally getting the 60's and 70's temps that i'm sure most of you have been having for a few weeks now. read more...

nashville news

so in my last blather i mentioned talking about the trip to nashville that i took a month ago. this is me now making good on my comment about making a comment on that.

the short version is that we're opening a cafe roma in murfreesboro, tn, which is about 25 miles southeast of nashville. mai has a brother and sister-in-law there that want to own their own business. since moving there, they're met another vietnamses couple who also want to own their own business and stop working for "the man". read more...

a big boat and a working web site

silly me...

i sent out that last email right as i was getting my web site upgraded and it wasn't working when some of you tried clicking the link to the pics.

the upgrade is done and i've just put out my pics of our trip to mobile and the uss alabama battleship. this is the same ship that they filmed the steven seagal movie "under siege" on. you can see them here: a really big boat read more...

ding-dong! the summer is dead!

hi all!

summer is finally (almost) over with and not a moment to soon, either. it\'s just way too hot here in new orleans for this ohio boy.

sorry for the lack of emails over said recently (almost) deceased summer. i kept thinking i would send an email and then something else would happen. then i would think i would send an email right after that and then something else would happen again. lather, rinse, repeat. :( read more...

a rat in the house

in an event that proved to be both shocking and disappointing to us, we discovered that our night manager david, a 20+ year friend of mai's family, was stealing money from us while he worked at cafe roma. read more...

first day of summer and i already want my money back

hello all!

a recent email from my friend tracie pointed out my laziness about sending out emails, so i thought it was time to send one. :)

i would say the end of spring has been good in new orleans, but we're already had summer temperatures (high 80's to mid 90's) for the last month or 2, so spring didn't really happen (or at least was really short). for me, this is way too hot and summer just began today. ugh. read more...

seattle to new orleans, take 3

once again, i find myself driving from seattle to new orleans.

the first time was driving mai's car, when we left seattle last july to move to new orleans.

the second time was driving my car, which got left behind the first time, and we did the yosemite/vegas/grand canyon trip, which was a ton of fun. read more...

spring has sprung

so, yeah, like... i really suck at sending these things out on a regular basis. many apologies... :(

so last we knew, cafe roma had just opened. 3 months later, it's still doing really good. business has grown steadily and we have lots of regular customers now. yay! read more...

cafe roma is open for business!

hello all!

as of yesterday, cafe roma (mai's new restaurant) is open for business! yay!

we had a family & friends dinner event monday evening that went very well, if not a bit chaotic. as far as the kitchen was concerned, it was more like a catered event for 25 people rather than a normal night at a restaurant. all 25 orders came in pretty much at the same time and all 25 sets of dirty dishes came back at once as well. i only note the dirty dishes because mai had every station covered except the dishwasher and when i saw things backing up, i took it upon myself to jump in and start washing.

everyone had a great time and anyone that had any doubts were convinced that mai really knows what she's doing and are now positive the restaurant is going to do great.

tuesday we had a great first day as well. lunch was a packed house including a few to-go orders. dinner slowed down greatly, but that was to be expected. we haven't really advertised yet and the whole shopping center slows down at night as well.

today has been busier than yesterday and so far, dinner seems to be ahead of yesterday as well.

anyway, just wanted to share the good news and let everyone know that as soon as you get to new orleans, you've got at least one free meal waiting for you at cafe roma. :)

take care!
-jesse
