happy holidays!

woo! another year gone by, another year of not knowing what the heck i spent all that time doing. :)

well, i guess i know what i spent some of it doing. lately in particular i've been mopping up lots of dog pee. :( we got prince our puppy and he's totally not house trained yet. we've been a bit slack on it but as of 2009, that dog is going to get beaten into shape. he has been fun to have around but his time getting spoiled has come to an end.

ding, dong, summer's dead!

woo! i never thought it would happen. 65 degrees out today and i'm loving it! it's also been over a month since i tried to clutter up all your inboxes so here i am again trying valiantly to do so. :)

gustav goes to dinner at cafe roma

so i realized that i forgot to say anything about the restaurant in that last email. also, i just wanted another opportunity to annoy you all and clutter up your in-boxes. :)

cafe roma suffered no real physical damage at all, except that it lost power for some small period of time. we think that it was actually late in the storm or the day after, since when mai's sister first got there, there was no electricity and yet the ice machine was still full and the frozen foods were all still frozen. she and her husband loaded up their pickup truck with as much of it as they could and put it in various freezers in their house and their parents house.

unfortunately, the same could not be said for the walk-in cooler and all the other refrigerators. they were all very warm and filled with now spoiled food. :(

we just got power back to the restaurant friday around 9:30pm. we knew that since the alarm company called us up to tell us of the alarm going off. we had already cleaned out all the refrigerators and the walk-in, so that night we turned on the a/c (the building had a very noticeable musty stink to it) and then we showed up saturday at 7am and dove into the cleaning process.
we were also able to call our primary food distributor and our produce company, both of whom were more than happy to give us a special saturday delivery so that we could get back open that afternoon still.

we called 1 or 2 kitchen staff and our niece oanh (our new head manager by the way) and one of our wait staff and we all went to town cleaning, prepping and doing what we had to to get open. customers started coming in and by the end of the day, you almost couldn't tell we had even been closed.

so aside from a lot of wasted stuff we had to toss out, the damage to anything around us (our houses, the restaurant, etc) was all really minimal compared to katrina 3 years ago.

i think the worst of it was suffered by mai, who for 2 days had to go without tv and internet and also didn't have cafe roma. she was so lost those 2 days, she didn't know what to do. :)

headed home

so the mayor of new orleans lifted the ban on returning so we're going to take our chances with traffic and such and head on home today. we're really hoping for an easier drive than our 15 hour flight out of town was.

will let you know this evening what things in new orleans look like.

project evacuation successful!

so our normal 8 hour drive to nashville took 15 hours... that really was not a fun drive. although we made it out of new orleans on back roads and had a great start to the drive, even those soon got jammed up at every traffic light and stop sign. we dealt with that for a while and then got back on the highway where it looked clear. 5 minutes later, stand-still gridlock. we dealt with that until the we were halfway there (mileage-wise) and we finally got off the highway and navigated back roads until we were north of birmingham, al, where we figured there wouldn't be any more evacuation traffic jams. sadly, by then, we had already had to deal with the worst of the delays but at least it was smooth sailing for the last part of the trip, albeit incredibly late and delayed.

we're going to hand out here until we see what the deal is tomorrow and what the delay in returning to new orleans might be.

hope you're all having a better labor day weekend than we are. :)

my first hurricane

so running just a few minutes behind schedule, here it is at 6:00am sunday morning and we're packing up the car with all of our food and clothing. cops are now rolling down the streets blaring out the announcement about the mandatory evacuation of new orleans and are telling people to get out.

we're headed to nashville to stay with some friends and business partners. it's a bit far to drive for an evacuation but they have a really nice place with a comfortable guest room, so it's worth the few extra hours of driving.

i'll send work once we've arrived so no one has to worry about anything. hope you're all enjoying your sunday morning more than we are. :)

omg!

so i got it in my head some time a little bit ago that no one was interested in the ongoing sometimes fun, sometime boring world of myself and so i stopped sending out my little blathering emails. but after a while it occurred to me that no one ever told me they didn't want to see my emails and usually i got replies from folks telling me about their current happenings in return, so i think i just sort of made the whole thing up and then thought it was true. so now i say to heck with that, i'm going to continue bothering you all and you all can just deal with it. :)

weekend with dad

so dad was in town and hung out with us at the new house he had never eaten at cafe roma yet either and so has finally seen what all the fuss is about. between stuffing him with food at cafe roma and taking him to the pelican club and cafe du monde (two of our favorite hangouts in the quarter) he said he gained like 10 pounds and didn't feel "not stuffed" until about 4 days after he went back home. :)

i'm pretty sure he had a really good time and it was great seeing him.

the joys of home ownership, without the owning part

so we moved into a new house. it's a rental, but is actually a house as opposed to an apartment. we really like it, but decided we wanted to paint the whole thing before we moved in (we also got a nice deduction from the rent for doing so). it looks so much nicer with new paint and is much bigger than where we were living. once i get everything put away and hung up i'll put up some pics of it.

yup, it's true... mai had a birthday! i was a slacker about it, but thankfully charlie, her pet bear, came through and saved the day. :)

chicago, chicago!

had a really good time in the windy city last weekend. we went up for the national restaurant association trade show. mom was jealous of it last year so she flew in to go with us. i also got to see my friends kyle and dave & myong and their son alan. we ate a ton of asian food (sushi, vietnamese and dim sum) and saw "prince caspian", the new narnia film.

even though it was supposed to be a weekend, we were up early every day and up late each night and i really needed another weekend after that one to catch up on my rest.

compared to new orleans, the weather was great and it was really shocking to come home and get hit by the heat and humidity. ugh.

i still haven't seen "speed racer" or the new indy film, but i'm hoping to get caught up this week. i don't want to fall too far behind in my summer films and so many keep getting released.

hope you're all having fun!

i am iron man

saw "iron man" yesterday with the guys and it was a lot of fun! robert downey jr. played the part very well and i had no idea jeff bridges was in it as the bad guy, and i didn't even recognize him at first he looks so different. it made for a great start to a fun movie summer and i'm really looking forward to "speed racer" next weekend to continue that trend.

our trip to the rock

more info to follow soon, as well as a few pics, but we're back from our trip to the bahamas. we went to exuma, as opposed to the more popular and touristy nassau, and had a good time. lots of downtime punctuated by some fun on the beach and a few boat races.

i think our friend andrea, who lives there and works at the four seasons hotel, now thinks we're a bit boring, but oh well. we still had fun. :)

open wide...

aside from my taxes, which i did today and am getting a refund (as opposed to owing like last year), i also had a dentist appointment today. i had 2 small cavities and went in and them filled. the one on top got more silver, which makes some of my teeth close to the 99.99% pure silver state, but the bottom tooth got a tooth colored filling. that's pretty nice, wish i could have had more of that as a kid.

my how time flies...

so every time i say i'm gonna email people more and be better at communicating, BAM!, it's suddenly a month later and i'm like "how the heck did it get to be 30 days later?"

so it occurred to me i had forgotten a few things of interest in my last email. so i'll wax nostalgically about them now.

web site revamp #1 done!

all righty! whenever you happen to come across my web site and if you read a blather and think to yourself "boy, that jesse really has some nerve, i should tell him off", well, now you can. click the comment link below each blather and add your own words of wisdom to my web site!

of course, to do so, you'll first have to create a login. to do that, click the "new user" link at the top right corner in the login box and follow the directions from there.

so yes, after having that login box for like, oh, the last year on my web site, there's finally now a reason to actually log in. :)

best laid plans...

so some of you may have been thinking that you would have heard something about the nashville restaurant we've been working on. our lease negotiator, emerson, flew there almost 2 weeks ago and was at the closing point of having a great lease for us.

well, things didn't quite work out. read more...

happy mardi gras, happy new year, happy roma!

well... a lot has happened and i kept meaning to send out a bothersome, long-winded email and i kept being lazy. so here it finally is. lucky you. :)

mardi gras was really early this year (feb 5) but it felt more like april 5. we had 70 degree days and it was really nice out. my friend steve from ohio came down and spent a week or so hanging out and generally being a bum. i think he had a good time. :) read more...

i can see, i can see!

though things are just a tiny bit blurry, and my right eye is a touch worse than my left, for the most part i can see just fine now without the need for glasses or contacts. yay!

the doc said i have 20/20 in my right eye and my left eye is 20/15! however, my right eye has some minor hemorrhaging on it from the suction cup device that holds your eye in place during the surgery, and he says it will likely match my left eye in about a week once that all heals up. woo! read more...

target in range... fire lasers now!

hello all!

for some reason i kept forgetting to mention this in my last few emails. today at noon i'm headed to the laser eye surgery place and am getting lasik eye surgery. mai had this done back at thanksgiving and it turned out really well for her so we figured it was finally time i had it done as well.

so in 2 more hours, they'll be strapping me down, putting a suction cup on my eye and then blasting it to bits. read more...

a key west christmas and a disney new year, part 2

i'm back! did you miss me? :)

so i forgot to mention that while in key west, dad brought some tools and we spent some time performing plastic surgery on my car and he helped me get the hood unbent enough that i could install the new grill that he bought me for christmas. so my car doesn't look gimpy anymore. yay dad! read more...

a key west christmas and a disney new year, part 1

hello everyone!

i finally made it back home late last night from my extended florida holiday trip. me and mai had a blast and had no complaints at all about it being 80 degrees on christmas day (and most of the trip for that matter) though we could have done without the stomach virus that got passed around her family. ugh! :( read more...
