gustav goes to dinner at cafe roma

so i realized that i forgot to say anything about the restaurant in that last email. also, i just wanted another opportunity to annoy you all and clutter up your in-boxes. :)

cafe roma suffered no real physical damage at all, except that it lost power for some small period of time. we think that it was actually late in the storm or the day after, since when mai's sister first got there, there was no electricity and yet the ice machine was still full and the frozen foods were all still frozen. she and her husband loaded up their pickup truck with as much of it as they could and put it in various freezers in their house and their parents house.

unfortunately, the same could not be said for the walk-in cooler and all the other refrigerators. they were all very warm and filled with now spoiled food. :(

we just got power back to the restaurant friday around 9:30pm. we knew that since the alarm company called us up to tell us of the alarm going off. we had already cleaned out all the refrigerators and the walk-in, so that night we turned on the a/c (the building had a very noticeable musty stink to it) and then we showed up saturday at 7am and dove into the cleaning process.
we were also able to call our primary food distributor and our produce company, both of whom were more than happy to give us a special saturday delivery so that we could get back open that afternoon still.

we called 1 or 2 kitchen staff and our niece oanh (our new head manager by the way) and one of our wait staff and we all went to town cleaning, prepping and doing what we had to to get open. customers started coming in and by the end of the day, you almost couldn't tell we had even been closed.

so aside from a lot of wasted stuff we had to toss out, the damage to anything around us (our houses, the restaurant, etc) was all really minimal compared to katrina 3 years ago.

i think the worst of it was suffered by mai, who for 2 days had to go without tv and internet and also didn't have cafe roma. she was so lost those 2 days, she didn't know what to do. :)
