ding, dong, summer's dead!
woo! i never thought it would happen. 65 degrees out today and i'm loving it! it's also been over a month since i tried to clutter up all your inboxes so here i am again trying valiantly to do so. :)
a few more details about prince, our new puppy. his name is prince (duh) and he's a 9 week old pomeranian. mai's dad has one that had puppies that were very cute and mai was working on me for the last 6 months about getting a dog. i still consider this to be a trial period but i know that every day that goes by knocks one more nail into the dog house as it were. he's not house trained yet and i know we've been a little slack on it (it's amazing how fast a puddle of dog pee goes from "gross!" to "meh") but he's at least gotten the idea that when we take him outside, he's supposed to go pee first before we'll play with him. so that's something i guess.
the other big thing we did recently was that the both of us took a first flying lesson! one of our usual customers (a guy named leigh) is a pilot and instructor at the lakefront airport, which is just 2 miles from cafe roma. he has been bugging us for a while to take a lesson and a few saturdays ago we finally did. it was fun! the first lesson is all about getting you excited to fly, so you jump right into a plane and leigh taxied us to the runway and was like "this is how you take of, now do it". and we did! we got to fly around for about 20 minutes and then he had head back towards the airport and line up for the runway. we got pretty low before he finally took over the controls and actually landed us and that was the most nervous part for me. i went first and then mai had her turn. there's pics on my web site here:

in cafe roma news, we're closer to than ever to getting our next actual lease signed. it's currently working out that the third store location that we were approached with will be the first actual store to open up. it's going to be in hammond, louisiana, which is on the north side of lake pontchartrain, about 45 minutes from new orleans. we hope to sign the letter of intent within the next week (that's the legal precursor to the lease, it outlines the terms of the lease that we've been going back and forth over with the landlord). the restaurant itself is slated to be handed over to us by july 31, 2009 and we'll spend about 3 months getting it open. yay!
we also recently found out that the guy who was trying to buy the cafe roma franchise from the original owners (a guy named glen) is no longer trying to do so. this has been going on since almost a year ago today and over all that time we more and more had wished that the owners had approached us to buy out the franchise. about a month ago after not hearing anything about the sale for a few weeks, i called the primary owner and asked if we could buy it instead. he said he didn't know we were interested and that they already had a closing date for the deal. right before that mai had seen and mentioned to the wife of one of the other owners that we had an interest in the restaurant as well. well, imagine our surprise when on the day the deal with glen was supposed to close, 2 of the 3 owners come to our restaurant for lunch and then tell us the deal with glen was dead and they asked if we wanted to buy the franchise. that's all that has happened so far but we're very interested in doing so and told them that as well. i'll let you all know what happens when we meet with them again.
in movietone news, i haven't seen any movies lately though there's a few out that i want to see still. i have recently seen "terminator 3" and "justice league: the new frontier" from netflix and they were good. if you ever watched the animated superman or batman cartoons on the wb channel, "the new frontier" was similar to that and dealt with humans doing a mccarthy era/racism drive against that super heroes.
in personal news, last month i had another one of those pesky birthdays and am a year closer to being really old. :( but it was a great birthday season... my first gift came a few days before my birthday and the last gift was about 2 weeks afterwards. gonna have to try and arrange that every year. :)
i also for some crazy reason had a small lapse of sanity and went and got braces put on my teeth. it was probably one of those things were i could have never had it done, but then i foresaw them wanting to yank out a tooth in later years and having a bog old gap in my front teeth and me looking like a red neck and i just couldn't deal with that. so for the next 12 to 15 months i'll be reliving the high school experience i never had and being a "brace face" or "train tracks" kid (though since i only have the top teeth right now, i guess it would be monorail tracks, but that doesn't have the fancy alliteration and probably doesn't work as well as a taunt). i get the bottom teeth done in 2 or 3 months which was surprising since that's where all the wrong things are in my mouth.
eating with braces has been annoying and everyone tells me i'll adjust to it in a few weeks and then won't even notice. i also have like 2 new tooth brushes to use just for the braces. i'm sure many of you have been through all this but it's all new to me. ugh.
